There is no real answer to the question, which is better, an overhead or a spinning reel. It all depends on the type of fishing that you are doing. If you are going to be casting a lot and fishing in shallow water, then an overhead is probably not the preferred option. Usually an overhead has a bigger line capacity so you can hold more line than on a spinning reel. Also they tend to have more drag so that you can stop bigger fish.

One of the features that a lot of people like about overhead reels is that you can feel a bite on the drop by lightly thumbing the spool, and you can also pause the drop easily with your thumb which can catch you a lot of fish when micro jigging.
